Our Staff
Louise Kristofferson
Being the oldest of seven children, Louise is no stranger to helping raise children of all ages. Louise graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in child development and spent more than a decade teaching in classrooms and managing programs at establishments, as well as serving as an integral component in the development of a kindergarten readiness curriculum that was subsequently implemented in Head Start programs around the country. “Childcare is my passion; I love getting down and playing with the kids and doing activities. It’s satisfying to watch them learn new things,” she shared.
After her son Henry (pictured) was born, Louise sought a way to continue her passion of working with children while remaining a stay-at-home mom. As a single parent, she believed starting a school out of her home was a natural step. She was able to be with her son full time, while utilizing her skill set and knowledge to give other parents in her neighborhood a preschool option that consists of more hands on, healthy, holistic practices.
It seemed only natural to start Green Beans and Little Sprouts, a healthy living preschool with an emphasis on hands-on education. Music and language are also an important component of the curriculum that Louise has created. Students are engaged in learning Spanish songs weekly as the importance of being bilingual from an early age is highlighted. After being in business for just more than a year, Louise reached her maximum occupancy size and realized that she needed to find a new location in which to expand and hire additional staff.
Although Louise had a depth of experience and education in early childhood development and education, she did not have access to traditional forms of financing to fund her expansion. “Banks were telling me that I needed to have been in business for two years before being considered for a loan, but how was I supposed to do that?” she shared. Louise was able to obtain some help from family and friends to make the rent payments for the first two months, as well as pay the deposit on the new location, but that was still not enough. That is when Louise turned to Accion San Diego for additional support.
Accion provided Louise with a $10,000 loan enabling her to expand Green Beans and Little Children. Initially, Louise had a license for six students, but thanks to the loan, she will be moving into her new location – which can hold up to 22 students – at the end of October. In addition, the funds were used to furnish her preschool location, purchase necessary educational equipment and cover initial payroll for two new instructors.
Holli Nunes
Holli Nunes is one of our staff member and she recently moved to San Diego from Chico California. During her time spent in Chico she studied at CSU Chico earning her BA is Child Development. She says that she always knew she wanted to work with children but her passion was confirmed when she joined the program Camp Adventure Youth Services. She was trained to work at Child Development Centers at US military bases, working most closely with children ages 6 weeks to Pre-K. She was given the opportunity to work in Vicenza, Italy and Key West, Florida. Through these worldly experiences she have learned the importance of cultural and family diversity.
During her last two years in Chico she was the site supervisor/lead teacher at Mi Escuelita Maya Performing Arts Preschool. They focused on multicultural experiences, Spanish language enrichment, performing arts, organic eating habits and an environmental friendly lifestyle. She loves being around children. Some of her favorite activities to engage children include arts and crafts, singing, dancing, yoga, cooking projects and of course READING.
